Here's how we did it:

Choose a stencil. This one is from Dreamweaver Stencils.

Emboss the card with your stencil as usual. See instructions here.

After embossing, turn the card over and attach the stencil to the front of the card like a mask.

Use a dabber to apply VersaMark ink (or any other kind of pigment ink) to the design.

Apply Stampee's Stuck on You! bonding powder and tap off excess.

Heat set the powder with your heat tool.

Lay a piece of Stampee Foil over your design (shiny side up!), cover with a piece of copy paper, and run the whole thing through a pouch laminator.

Remove copy paper and peel off foil.

Voila! You've got a beautiful foil embossed card.

I was scouting new project ideas at my local bookstore when I ran across a book called Ductigami, The Art of the Tape, which gives you step by step instructions for how to make 18 different duct tape thingamajigs. Staring out at me from the middle of the book cover was the holiest of high school crafts, a duct tape wallet. The choice was made.

For the basic construction, I followed the quick and easy instructions in the book, using only a roll of tape, a pair of scissors and a ruler and was able to pull one of these together in about thirty minutes. The author does a pretty great job of providing you with useful diagrams for assembly.

To snazz it up, I figured horizontal stripes in a neutral tone were the right mix of simplicity and masculinity the duct tape wallet required. To create them, I simply used double sided tape to make the pattern and burnished the foil over it. Once the foil has been laid down, you can apply another layer of clear tape over it to keep the surface from being damaged. For more durability, these stripes could be sewn in place.

I've added a link to the book in the right hand column so you know just where to find it.

Happy crafting!
I just got back from Las Vegas, where I attended the SGIA (Specialty Graphics and Imaging Association) trade show which is mostly geared towards sign makers, screen printers, and specialty graphics and coatings manufacturers. I'm always looking for cool crossover technologies from other industries that I can apply to the crafting world so I can continue to provide my customers with innovative products. At present, I'm working on a screen printing project. Hopefully I'll be able to deliver a home-based system to all you crafters out there that's easier (and cheaper!) than the other screen printing set-ups on the market already.

practically an expert

The plan is to provide you with a screen printing system that eliminates the need for an exposure unit and I'm happy to say that while at SGIA I made several strides forward in being able to bring this product together. I hope to have it commercially available for the first time at CHA Summer, 2011.

Now, you paper crafters may be asking yourself, "Why would I want to screen print paper? Isn't that a fabric process?" Well, I'll tell you: Because it's the most convenient way to make truly customizable prints. You make a screen from an image created on your computer (this can include clip art for those of us who are artistically challenged), and then you have the ability to print that image with both inks and adhesive (the gateway to all things shiny). This allows you to apply embossing powders, foils, flocking and glitter in any pattern you could ever imagine. No longer will you be confined by the limitations of your stamps and glue pens! With Stampee's new system, if you can print it, you can make a screen from it. And, oh, the world is yours to decorate. :)
My family has been in the printing industry for four generations, beginning with my great grandfather who was a pressman. My grandfather followed in his footsteps and in 1977 he founded a company manufacturing thermography machines. Thermography machines allowed printers to create raised printing more easily and economically than the process of engraving. Today, the craft industry knows thermography as "embossing."

As I was looking through some embossing tutorials on other crafting sites, I rarely found the basic information that would allow users to get the best possible raise on their embossed images, so I sat down with my grandpa and we had a little chat. Well, actually, he just handed me a dvd he made of himself explaining how to do thermography....but I watched it!

gold embossing powder in a standard granulation

Here's the "need to know" information:

A great embossed effect is dependent upon 7 factors:
1) Kiss impression
2) Good lay down of ink
3) Paper considerations
4) Priming the paper
5) Correct powder size
6) Proper heat
7) Sufficient cooling

Let's get started!

1. Kiss impression: The first concept is that when you stamp an image down, you want the ink to be riding high on top of the paper. The first mistake you can make is to apply so much pressure to your paper when you stamp that you actually make an impression in the stock. This results in the ink being slightly below the surface of the paper when it's applied, and that's no good! Be gentle, ladies.

2. Good lay down of ink: Before you even take the lid off that ink pad, make sure you're using an embossable ink. These include pigment and watermarking inks. They're formulated to dry very slowly, allowing you time to apply the embossing powder.

When you've got the correct ink, make sure you ink up your stamp until it's squishy (you'll know it when you feel it.) The ink acts as your adhesive for the powder, so don't skimp here.

Stamp your image and make sure it's solid. Any areas of lightness won't hold powder.

3. Paper considerations: To achieve a great raise, the best papers to use are: fine woven, sized, and coated stocks. Basically, we're looking for a paper that's not going to absorb all the powder when it's in liquid form. We want the liquid powder to wick into the paper, but only slightly, just enough to create a bond between the powder and the paper. Loose weave papers have a tendency to soak up all of the wet powder, making them less than ideal.

4. Priming the paper: So, you've picked out an ideal paper to emboss. Great! But now you have to make sure it's not full of moisture. If you've embossed a larger image area before and noticed the finished product looked lumpy, like an orange peel (industry term), this was caused by steam being released from the paper while you were melting the embossing powder. Here's a quick fix: Use a drying powder, like Stampee's Dry it Up! pre-embossing powder, on your stock before stamping your image. You just sprinkle it on, shake it around, and tap it off, then return the powder to its jar. This will dry your sheet and remove static, eliminating the dreaded orange peel and runaway pieces of powder that get stuck to your non-image areas. Hooray!

5. Correct powder size: Have you ever tried to create an embossed image and it came out gritty instead of smooth and shiny? Or maybe you were embossing an image you stamped only to find the embossing powder spilling over the sides and filling in some of the smaller details of your image after it had been heated. Don't worry, it's not just you. :)

Here's the scoop: Embossing powders are made in different granulation sizes. The most common and versatile powder is a #14 granulation, and that's what you usually find as your standard crafting embossing powder.

If you're using this powder to emboss an image and the finished product is gritty (this may happen over large solid image areas), the powder granulation size is probably too small.

If the melted powder is overflowing off of your image area and clogging up small details in your image, your granulation size is too large.

Luckily, you can purchase clear embossing powders from your crafting supplier in a few granulation sizes. Make sure to keep standard, coarse, and fine line powders on hand so you can always get the perfect raise! Now you know what to look for, so no excuses.

6. Proper heat: Common problems occur when too much heat is applied. If you've heated too long and you notice your image start to drop, turn your sheet over and you'll frequently see your image is coming through on the other side. You have completely liquified the powder by using too much heat. Sorry, this one's operator error.

Conversely, not using enough heat will prevent you from getting that high, glossy raise. So go ahead and heat until you hit that point, and then PUT THE HEAT GUN DOWN.

7. Proper cooling: This one is simple. Don't touch your embossed image with anything until it's completely cool. This will allow it to set, keeping it perfect.

There you have it. A lengthy and detailed tutorial about embossing!
Oh, and by the way, my grandpa's in his eighties and still manufacturing thermography machines. :)

Looking for a fun, fall inspired project? Try creating a paper lantern owl.

What you'll need:

Paper lantern: You can purchase these at most party stores. I got a pack of six for under nine dollars.

3 pieces of coordinating scrapbooking paper (1 of these should be dark), and 1 piece of white copy paper

String

Glue Dots

2 brads

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for assembling the lantern and hang it up. Don't worry, it's pretty user friendly, it just snaps together.

Now for those of you who have circle cutting tools it's time to dust those babies off. Since I don't have anything that fancy I just traced circles from different sized jars I had sitting around my house (a la kindergarten). For the eyes, you'll need two large circles of a patterned paper, two medium circles of white copy paper, and 2 small circles of a dark, solid-colored paper. I got fancy with the white circles and cut the outside into fringe so I could ruffle it up like feathers when assembled.

When cut, just stack all three circles together and stick a thumbs tack through the center. Once you've poked your pilot hole, insert a coordinating brad to secure it all together. Slap a Glue Dot on the back of each eye and stick to the lantern.

Cut a small triangle out of the dark paper and fold it down the middle. This is your beak. Just stick a piece of double sided dimensional tape on the back and attach it to the lantern under the eyes.

Cut the wings out of a patterned paper and attach with Glue Dots. I also made the fringe on the back side of the wings and fluffed up the "feathers."

Cut the shapes for the feet out of the dark paper and punch a small hole at the top of each foot. Attach with string to the metal hanging hooks that are on the inside of the lantern. To keep the feet facing forward I taped them together on the backside.

Now for the head feathers: Just fold up a piece of the dark paper accordion style, then fold that in half and stick it into the hole in the top of the lantern.

Now all you have to do is find the perfect place to hang him. Enjoy!

I'm happy to introduce Stampee's newest line of products, our Rise & Shine! pearly embossing powders, available in red, evergreen, blue, and violet. As loose powder, all of the pearls look like plain-old-boring clear embossing powder. However, when they're heat set they really come to life and produce a glitzy iridescent finish.

These pearly powders are really versatile, so let me give you the basics.

over dark ink

When you apply these over dark colored inks, you get an opaque metallic/iridescent finish in the powder color that you used. In this example I chose violet.

Get this effect: Stamp an image using a dark colored embossable ink. Normally you'd probably use black, but I used a very dark indigo here and it didn't make any difference. Sprinkle on the Rise & Shine! pearly embossing powder and gently tap off excess. Heat the powder with your heat gun until the powder melts to a smooth finish and becomes super snazzy. You've got a very iridescent violet design in your hands. Hooray!

*Side note: pigment inks that tend to stay wet longer (Color Box) will give you a marbled look after you've heat set the powder, as opposed to drier pigment inks (Ranger).

over clear embossing ink

So, you're ready for something with a little more pizazz? Good news: you can apply the pearly powders over clear embossing ink and light colored stock to produce a shimmer effect with a color tint like my example to the left. Try using this effect to create a really pretty patterned paper with stamps, or to make a jazzed up watermark.

Get this effect: Stamp an image using a clear embossable ink. Sprinkle on the Rise & Shine! pearly embossing powder and gently tap off excess. Heat the powder with your heat gun until the powder melts to a smooth finish and becomes super snazzy. You're a card-making rockstar.

These powders really pick up on the colors behind them, so you need to understand that if you stamp an image in clear ink on black paper you're going to get the same effect you would if you were applying the powder to dark ink. Got it? Good! Dark background=opaque and iridescent. Light background=tinted and iridescent.

Hold onto your pants, and get ready for some seriously cute stuff! I was strolling through my local book store, scanning the paper crafting section when I came across this little jewel. I was immediately drawn to its super cute illustrations and figured that even I could operate a pair of scissors and a tape roller adeptly enough to put a few paper toys together.

On the front cover the book claims to have, "32 terribly cute toys," just waiting to be cut out and assembled, and the book delivered. I decided to start myself off with the toaster (I couldn't resist the angry piece of burnt toast's alluring eyes), which is the only toy I saw where you have to assemble components that go inside the toy as well as outside. Think heating elements. My point is, I must have picked the second hardest design to start with, the first being some fancy-schmancy Polaroid camera job with photos popping out.

As promised by the author, self-taught illustrator Michelle Romo, all I needed was a pair of scissors, some double-sided tape, and a craft knife to put these little guys together. The directions were simple and, well, direct: cut on the solid lines, score and fold on the dotted lines, then tape it all together.

Most of the cut outs were easy-peasy and could be done with scissors but some required a steady hand wielding a craft knife. For example, the toaster required thin slits to be removed from the middle of the top so the angry piece of toast had a place from which to glare. When it came to scoring the dotted lines it was easy enough to lightly run my craft knife across those using a straight edge as a guide, and that gave my guys nice, crisp edges when I got them all folded together.

All in all, I'd say these guys are worth the work, and even if you don't decide to make the toys the book is absolutely beautiful.

I should note for all my crafters out there who are trying to get the most out of their materials, the back side of the cutout paper is printed with super cute designs so you can turn all of your scraps over and use them for other projects. Hooray!

In this photo you can see a side by side comparison of plain black ink (top), and our Black Out foil (bottom).

About Black Out:
Black Out foil is the perfect counterpart to our White Out foil. Instead of giving a metallic or holographic finish like many other foils, Black Out gives a glossy, opaque black finish to stamped images. This is a great feature when you want to add something extra to your paper creation but don't want to add the dimension or bulk of embossing.

Keep in mind that you can use ANY COLOR INK behind Black Out, and you will get a glossy black finish every time.

Look out for a Stampee Crafts News special on Black Out and Orange foil for all of your upcoming holiday creations!

The Challenge: Create a doll at least 6" tall using at least two stamped images. The doll also had to be articulated in at least 4 places.

I had never created a paper doll before so I printed off a paper doll template from The Enchanted Gallery website. It's worth perusing the paper doll section on that site anyway because there are a lot of good suggestions about how to stamp/assemble your doll. They have regular doll templates as well as mermaid templates. Since I had some clear water patterned holographic foil laying around, and some silver foil that looked like scales, I opted for the mermaid. :)

Here's how I made the lovely lady:

1. First I used my inkjet printer to print the mermaid pattern onto a cream colored card stock and then I cut out the appropriate pieces (except for the tail). The stamp I wanted to use for the face was a little too small in scale for the mermaid's body, so I cut everything down to size so it would fit more proportionately.

2. I loosely cut out the tail so it was surrounded by a little space and stamped over the entire area with my VersaMark watermark stamp pad. Then I applied Stuck on You! bonding powder and heat set the powder with my heat tool. When the bonding powder was set, I applied Stampee Foil in the Silver Mesh pattern to the area using the laminator method (watch our tutorial video here).

3. After I finished applying the foil I cut the tail out. Applying foil beyond the edge of the tail pattern and cutting it down to size after ensured that the tail would have nice clean edges. I cut the end of the tail off and rounded the edges on both pieces so I could use this as one of the points of articulation. I then set the tail pieces to the side for assembly later.

4. Using a stamp from The Enchanted Gallery I stamped the mermaid's face/hair with black StazOn ink onto the same cream colored card stock I used for the template. Then I colored the image with colored pencils and cut it out.

5. Using the same colors I did on the face, I colored the rest of the pieces of her body: the torso, upper arms and lower arms.

6. When all of the body parts were colored I stamped over all of them with my VersaMark watermark ink pad, applied foil bonding powder, set the powder with my heat gun and applied the Stampee Foil in the Clear Water pattern using the laminator method. The clear foils are really nice because they just give a holographic pattern to whatever you're stamping (such as glitter patters, water, bubbles, etc.) while still showing all of the colors underneath.

7. For her "bathing suit" I used two small pieces of a border stamp and applied Lavender foil over them. I cut the pieces out with an Xacto knife and attached them to the torso using 3D double sided tape. I should note that I molded them downward on the outside edges to make her "anatomically correct," hehe.

8. At this point, all of my pieces were ready for assembly. I just played around with the pieces until I got them where I thought they should be and then I used a thumb-tac to poke holes through the layers where I intended to put brads.

9. I attached the end of the tail, both arms and both elbows with brads so they would be movable. I used glue and tape to attach her head to her torso and her torso to her tail.

Now she's ready to be post marked and sent off to my swap buddy!
The challenge was to create a card with a similar layout to one that was posted. Everyone who participated was entered into a drawing for a few sheets of free stamps.

Here's how I made the card:
1. Using my new stamps from The Enchanted Gallery, I stamped the images of the women onto gray card stock I had cut into 1.5" squares using black StazOn ink.

2. After the girls were stamped, I colored them in using colored pencils.

3. Once the gils were colored, I attached each gray square to a larger square of sparkly lilac card stock. Once that was done I set the girls off to the side.

4. Using silver pigment ink, I stamped a pattern using a flourish stamp (available at Michael's) onto the left side of the card.

5. I sprinkled on some "Stuck on You!" bonding powder over the flourishes and applied Rainbow Silver Stampee Foil using the traditional pouch laminator method (there's a video tutorial of this method on the right column of this blog).

6. After the foil was applied, I cut two thin strips of paper, which I layered, to run down the center of the card. The bottom paper has a geometric gray and white design, and the top is a white vellum with a small polka dot pattern.

7. Once I glued down the center strip of paper, I used 3 dimensional double sided tape to attach the girls to the right side of the card.

Wish me luck on those free stamps!
At several trade shows we've shown samples of stamped images that incorporate glitter and we've been asked over and over again how the look was created.

This is a domino that is stamped with one of the images in the stamp set "Four Modern Women" from The Enchanted Gallery. This look was achieved by stamping the image on the domino with VersaMark ink, and then sprinkling on a clear embossing powder (fine) with rainbow glitter (also available in red, blue, gold and silver) mixed in. Both of these products are available at Stampee.net.

This is one of the easiest ways to incorporate glitter into your stamping projects and you can get a wide range of effects just by mixing colors and varying the ratio of glitter to embossing powder.

Added bonus, you ask? The glitters are more durable when mixed with embossing powders as opposed to using some form of adhesive to attach them to your projects! Enjoy!
The challenge was to create 4.35" x 2.75" tags to swap with other members using a specific color scheme. This month the colors were orange, turquoise, cream and each stamper had to pick a fourth color to add. Neutrals were freebies.

Aside from the tag challenge set up by Inky Whiskers, I knew I would be incorporating Stampee Foil into the design. I wanted to use the distressed foil technique (May 2009), because the bottom layer of ink that shows through the distressed foil could easily add the fourth color to my scheme.

My final color scheme: orange, turquoise, cream and gold.

This is how I created the tags:
1. The tags were cut out of a cream colored parchment style card stock.

2. The edges of each tag were aged with a combination of Slate and Meadow Adirondack alcohol inks from Ranger. I just took a few drops of each color on the dabber and added a bit of blending solution. Then I started with the dabber off of the tag and brought the color onto the edges and blended. This gave the tag a nice aged effect that coordinated with the distress technique used to apply the Stampee Foil. Tim Holtz has a great YouTube video tutorial showing the different ways the Adirondack inks can be used. Watch Tim's fancy video.

3. Using a large french script stamp inked with Encore gold pigment ink, both from Stampin' Up, I stamped the background image over the whole card.

4. Using the distressed foil technique I applied Stampee Foil in Aquamarine over the entire background image. Note: when the aqua foil is removed, small areas of gold pigment ink are revealed.

5. After the background was completed I used an embellished Cherish stamp (Stampin' Up) inked with the gold pigment ink, to stamp the image in the top right hand corner of the tag.

6. I then used the distressed foil technique to apply Orange Stampee Foil to the newly stamped image.

7. My tags were ready for swappin'. :)
Stampee.net offered a test sample of the Stamp-N-Foil and bonding powder, and yours truly was designated as the official tester for FCD. :o)

The foil product comes in a generous 4.75" x 20' roll, so there is plenty to play with. The maker intends for the product to be used/applied with the aid of a heat laminating machine. As I don't own one, nor was I willing to buy one specifically to test this product, I set out on a mission to see how it could be used sans laminator.

My first few experiments invloved the foil, bonding powder, a heat gun and bone folder. This produced okay results. It was a bit hard on the fingers since I had to be right under the heat gun rubbing with the bone folder; the results were decent, albeit distressed. If you were going for a distressed look, this would be an acceptable application method - but watch your fingers!

So, the next thing I tried was a fine tipped glue pen (Zig) and free-handed drawing. I placed the foil directly on top of the glue pen design, tapped it in place with my fingers, and let it dry. Once dry, I removed the foil sheet. The results were very exciting! Even though I only used a border scrap of paper for this test, I may try to incorporate it into a future piece of work. It was playful and fresh.

So, the next thing I decided to do, was use one of FCD's die cuts, the something fishy fish to be specific, and the coordinating stamp. I covered the foil with a piece of paper to protect it, and rubbed it to firmly adhere it. I then set it aside to dry. Once dry, I removed the foil sheet, and stamped the image on top using black Stazon, and added a bit of shimmerz to lightly color portions of the fish. I then attached this matte to a plain ivory card. To finish the card, I used the fine tip Zig glue pen and drew a border around the card. I then covered the glue with some foil strips and set it aside to dry. The finihshed results are quite happy: shiny, playful, cheery. This will definitely brighten anyone's day! What do you think? This is the scanned version; you know scans never show shine very well, but this version captures the color fairly well:

Here are a couple of alternate views taken with a camera to capture the shine. Notice the shimmery background on the handmade paper? Lovely, isn't it? And the clean shine of the foil on the border and fish - also very pretty:

Hope you enjoyed this product test. The product is fun, but to really appreciate its intended purpose, you must have a heat laminator. The product is supposed to work with a stamped image, coat with bonding powder & heat (like you would a clear EP), then apply the foil, cover with a sheet of paper, and feed through a laminator. When done, the image is supposed to be a perfect rendition of the stamped image in foil. I suspect not many stampers own a heat laminator. If you do, and would be interested in seeing this product in FCD's store, I'd appreciate a comment back.

As always, thanks for stopping by!
